Limewash - Design - Why would you add linseed oil to Limewash?

Bethany Evans Posted this on 25 Apr 2024

Linseed oil is often added to the final limewash coat for several reasons, primarily to enhance its durability, water resistance, and adhesion to surfaces.

Linseed oil acts as a natural binder in limewash, helping it adhere more effectively to surfaces and improving its durability over time.

Linseed oil is typically mixed with the lime putty or slaked lime before adding water to create the limewash mixture. The proportion of linseed oil to lime can vary depending on the desired characteristics of the final product and the specific application.

Linseed oil-based limewash can be applied to a variety of porous surfaces, including masonry, plaster, and wood. It is commonly used for exterior applications due to its weather-resistant properties.

In summary, adding linseed oil to limewash can improve its durability, water resistance, and adhesion while enhancing its overall appearance. This natural, renewable ingredient offers both practical and environmental benefits for various architectural and decorative applications.

Please note limewash that contains linseed oil should be used for the final coat only. A suggested ratio is 100ml of linseed oil per 20l of limewash.
