Finishes - Decoupling / anti-crack membranes

Bethany Evans Posted this on 26 Mar 2024

When installing natural tiles with a lime-based adhesive such as the Adhere Cal or a lime mortar there is no need to install a decoupling membrane. Most lime-based finishes will not bond well to the surface of decoupling membranes so there could be an issue with delamination if one is used, and they could also affect the breathability of the finished surface.

When installing a non-breathable finish such as porcelain or ceramic tiles most manufacturers will recommend a decoupling layer to reduce the risk of tiles cracking especially when underfloor heating is installed. This can be installed over the limecrete with conventional tile adhesives without an issue following manufacturers recommendations.
