Preparation
- IMPORTANT: Protect your eyes with safety glasses (ones with sides) and keep eyewash close to hand!
- Tip: Lime is caustic and can seriously damage eyes. Goggles are essential at all stages.
- IMPORTANT: Wear gloves and cover skin. Lime burns are gradual (i.e. you don’t feel them at the time) but can be very serious so PPE is essential.
- Tip: Thin, disposable gloves are easiest to work with.
- Remove any loose any crumbly material. Particularly any cementitious or gypsum-based materials.
Application
- Thoroughly dampen the surface before applying the levelling coat or adhesive mortar (to ensure moisture from the plaster isn’t absorbed too rapidly) by the background.
- Apply levelling coat of Fibred NHL 3.5 plaster in even 10mm coats.
- Apply a combed coat of Isovit E-Cork Adhesive Mortar with 10mm notched trowel
- Apply Schneider Wall 140, then once adhesive mortar is firm add fixings. Drill and fix two insulated anchors into the middle of each board.
- Tip: Work from the base upwards, joints must be staggered.
- Complete fixings the next day.
- Then apply first coat of Isovit E-Cork.
- Trowel mesh into face of plaster.
- Apply second pass of Isovit E-Cork to cover mesh c. 10mm on the same day.
- Allow three days, apply final coat of Reabilita Cal AC.
- Once sufficiently firm, apply finishing techniques for desired external texture.
- After 30 days apply a breathable paint such as Beeck’s Renosil or Graphenstone GCS/Graclean.
The application of lime plaster is more involved than using conventional plaster. It is highly recommended to use a builder experienced in the use of lime plaster or at the very least you should get some practical experience e.g. on a course, as it is not possible to cover every point in detail here.
