Clifton Place, NewportAn exciting opportunity arose to refurbish a series of fine Georgian townhouses within the St Woolos Conservation Area, Newport. These mid 1840s Grade II-listed properties form part of a formal terrace on Stow Hill below Newport Cathedral.

Contractors: J&B Plastering, G&S Decorite

Materials Supplied: Hydraulic Glaster roughcast, Ty-Mawr limewash, Weather Protection Lacquer wood and metal paint, Beecks silicate mineral paint

Instead of replacing their stucco façade like-for-like a sensitive environmental solution was desired, but one that would work with the buildings’ construction and architecture. Ty-Mawr’s Glaster® render was chosen.

This lime and recycled glass roughcast render have all the benefits of a lime render with the added advantages of its environmental credentials. By using a compatible but modern material the result is an attractive finish which works with the buildings’ construction and offers an honest intervention.

The roughcast was spray applied and painted with limewash and silicate mineral paint on different elevations. Ty-Mawr’s plant-based paints were also used for the cast iron rainwater goods, bracketed timber eaves, tripartite sashes, oriel windows and panelled doors.
