How do I mix the plaster? What is 'knocking up'?
- Either type of mixer is suitable (pan / cement mixer)
- It’s a good idea to have a sharp knife with you so you can open the bag
- Opening a bag badly can cause more work and waste
- Empty bag into mixer and start.
- If there is any need to add water do this tentatively. The mix is thixotropic, so it will wet up as it mixes
- Leave to mix
- Add more water if necessary
- Mixing time is around 15-20 minutes
- Be prepared, plaster can be knocking up while you are doing other things on site.
The application of lime plaster is more involved than using conventional plaster. It is highly recommended to use a plasterer experienced in the use of lime plasters or at the very least you should get some practical experience e.g. on a course, as it is not possible to cover every point in detail here.
