Ty-Mawr meets with the Welsh School of Architecture regarding ongoing project!

We were delighted to welcome Dr Chris Whitman to present the findings of a project we have been involved in, exploring infill materials for retrofitting historic timber-framed buildings. This project forms part of our long-standing collaboration with Dr Whitman and the Welsh School of Architecture over the last 10 years.

The materials and build-ups for the study were supplied by Ty-Mawr and included, wood fibre, wood wool, shuttered hempcrete, cork, and wattle and daub. Each test cell contained two versions of each build-up—one finished with non-hydraulic lime hemp plaster and the other with an NHL 3.5 mix. The study examines the moisture and thermal performance of these build-ups, as well as technical details at junctions and their long-term behaviour in real-world conditions.

The test cell has been in place for five years, continuously collecting real-world performance data alongside climatic measurements. This has provided valuable insights into actual material behaviour, helping to validate and improve our material choices.

The study has revealed important findings, and you can read the full write-up here:

A huge thanks to Dr Whitman and the Welsh School of Architecture for their ongoing support and collaboration.
