We are thrilled to announce that the stunning garden created by Size of Wales has won a prestigious Gold Award at this year's Chelsea Flower Show! The garden itself was designed in the shape of Wales and featured some of the country’s rarest plants.
These included the Beacons hawkweed (Hieracium breconicola), which can only be found on a remote mountain ledge in the Bannau Brycheiniog national park, also known as the Brecon Beacons. Meanwhile the Brecon dandelion (Taraxacum breconense) – once found across Monmouthshire and Powys – is also on the verge of extinction.
The Size of Wales garden, likely the most biodiverse in Chelsea Flower Show history, with more than 313 different species of plants, reflecting the number of different types of trees that can occur in a single hectare of tropical forest. This biodiverse garden was also judged to be the best in its category at the prestigious show.
Ty-Mawr supplied lime hemp plaster for the garden's structures. This sustainable material not only enhances the garden’s aesthetic but also promotes sustainability, aligning perfectly with the ethos of the show.
Congratulations to all involved in this remarkable achievement! The award not only celebrates the talent of Welsh designers but also underscores the importance of sustainable practices in modern gardening. Be sure to visit the garden in its new permanent home at Bangor University's Treborth Botanic Garden.
